Making It a Week of Justice

Most of us observed President’s Day on Monday, even if only by snagging an extra hour of sleep or feeling inconvenienced by closed banks and post offices. On the heels of this U.S. holiday comes an international day of observance. Although it will be business as usual on Wednesday, February 20th, you can still join with countries and justice advocates around the globe to celebrate World Day of Social Justice.
The UN declared February 20 World Day of Social Justice six years ago, with the goal to “support efforts of the international community in poverty eradication.” On Wednesday, nations will affirm the need for gender equity, fair access to employment and social services, and care for human rights worldwide. This is work that God asks us to engage in year round, and reminds us to serve our local neighbors and pray for our international ones.
Plant With Purpose is especially excited to celebrate World Day of Social Justice this year because it coincides with The Justice Conference, an annual event being held this year in Philadelphia. Founded in 2010, the conference has grown into a mecca for those seeking dialogue and change around issues like hunger, child slavery, poverty, and HIV/AIDS. Advocates, speakers, and learners from around the world—including several Plant With Purpose staff—will converge this weekend to enact a generational movement toward justice.
Both The Justice Conference and World Day of Social Justice point us back to Micah 6:8. Although social justice has become a buzz term in recent years, the ancient command to act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with our Lord will never be cliché. On February 20, we invite you to consider how to live out justice as a worldview and not a trendy topic. Let’s enter into meaningful conversation, pray for the work of justice around the world, and then move into action right where we are.
Together, let’s celebrate our God who acts justly and loves mercy!
