Chasing Ice–Coming to a City Near You

Growing up in California, summers were spent camping in places like the awe-inspiring Yosemite Valley. Even today, I find the granite walls and varied rock formations of the Valley overwhelming. Trips to the nature center explain the handy work of glaciers that carved this U-shaped valley, leaving behind the likes of Half Dome, Glacier Point, and El Capitan.

Glaciers are a powerful yet slow moving force of ice that shape the earth and in themselves offer beauty. Of course the ice is melting more quickly these days. While at the Environmental Media Awards in September, a film called Chasing Ice won for best documentary. From the short clip that was shown, I realized the strength of the story—25 cameras, 3 years, and one photo per hour to visually track changes in these giant reservoirs of ice. Later that night the producer, Paula DuPre’ Pesmen (credits include The Cove, three of the Harry Potter movies, and Mrs. Doubtfire) stopped by the booth Plant With Purpose shared with Kellogg Garden Products. We talked about home gardens, the work of Plant With Purpose, and the story of Chasing Ice.

After watching a screener version, Doug Satre, Plant With Purpose’s director of development, said, Chasing Ice is a breathtaking and sobering journey though our world’s fragile glacial landscapes. Anyone who desires to hold an informed opinion on issues surrounding climate change needs to see this movie.”

The award-winning documentary Chasing Ice will be showing in theaters around the country this fall. Follow National Geographic photographer James Balog as he captures images of the rapidly changing glaciers in Iceland, Greenland, Alaska, and Montana. What you’ll see is heart wrenching yet visually stunning.

Plant With Purpose supporters have been invited to special premiere of the movie on November 24 in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Berkley. For FREE tickets (based on availability) please follow this link and enter the code PWP.
