John Mitchell

Director of International Programs

John joined the Plant With Purpose team in October 2013 after more than two decades of professional humanitarian work. As Director of International Programs, John is responsible for collaboratively setting and executing strategies to ensure Plant With Purpose field programs are the best in class, continuously improving, and scalable. He provides oversight of holistic, aligned programs for economic development, agriculture and reforestation, and discipleship. Along with the entire U.S. programs team, John is a bridge between the Plant With Purpose international programs and San Diego offices.

Since 1990, John has managed a range of programs in the field: refugee work in Afghanistan, microfinance in Mozambique and Azerbaijan, rural livelihoods in Uganda, water and sanitation in Sudan, education in Pakistan and Ethiopia, public health in Burundi, and emergency response in these countries and others. Most recently, John served as the Africa Area Director for Save the Children. He speaks multiple languages, including Turkish, Urdu, French, and Portuguese.

John is a dual-citizen of New Zealand and the United States, but feels at home in Pakistan, where he was born, and in Turkey, where he married, lived, and raised his children for years. A Kiwi residing in the States for the first time, John is navigating life in Southern California with his wife, Esra, and their two children, Altan and Sophi Rengin.
